Crock Pot Moose Stew




Growing up in Northern Ontario, there are 3 rules you need to follow, to fit in. You have to like fishing, hunting and snow. I guess I'm not a true Northern Ontario girl, because I love to fish and hunt, but could totally do without the snow, LOL. I grew up fishing in the summer and hunting in the fall. We ate what we caught, so I grew up eating fresh fish, partridge, rabbit and moose. So, I was super excited that my brother and Dad, decided to share their moose with us. Never really having cooked it, I didn't know what to do with it, other than fry it. Then I thought it might taste good in a stew, so I did some browsing on line.





I found THIS recipe and thought it sounded good. I did change a few things in it, so I'll post my version for you today. This was really delicious. The meat wasn't gamey, the potatoes were creamy and the tomato soup tied everything together. The kids really loved this as well, as did Hubby. It is a great and different way to cook up moose and bet it would even be delicious with beef, in it's place.


Crock Pot Moose Stew

1 lb. moose stew meat, trimmed and cut into cubes (or Beef)
3 tbsp. oil
1 med. onion, chopped

1 soup can water
1 tsp. smoked paprika
1 clove garlic, crushed
4 medium potatoes, diced 
1 C carrots, sliced
1 can tomato soup
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. basil
1 tsp. pepper
1 tsp salt
1 C frozen peas

In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium high heat. Brown the meat on all sides and place in crock pot. In a bowl mix together the tomato soup, water, Worcestershire sauce, basil, salt and pepper. Add potatoes, carrots and peas to the crock pot and stir to combine. Pour tomato soup mixture over all, in crock pot, and cook on low for 6-8 hrs.

I love to fish and hunt too and also dislike snow. But I don't really have to worry about that!

It's great that you have the opportunity to try different game. When we moved to Colorado, I had never eaten elk before, but ended up liking it as much as beef. Thanks for sharing on Hearth & Soul Hop. :)

I had moose once in Northern Ontario when I was a kid, but I can't really remember what it tasted like. At the time I just thought it was beef :) Your stew sounds delicious, the flavours you have used are a great foil to game.

ty very much!! im from new brunswick canada :) got all this game in the freezer its time to use it as we got a new moose! i like letting the meat(moose,rabit,deer and partridge sit in salt water over night before its cooked,,takes the gamey out) love the tomato soup in this!

This is a great stew. I used moose, but beef meat would also work. I agree - the tomato soup makes a big difference.

I made this today for my hubby, who hates wild meat. I used barley instead of potatoes. and I used plain paprika instead of smoked paprika. Well hubby tried abite b4 it was finish cooking and he is now impatiently waiting for it to finish. he loves it! he said give whoever gave u that recipe a "thumbs up." its a keeper!!!

Recipe sounds great! I have a nice 2 lb piece of moose meat and I'm cooking for a few people. Would I just double the recipe (all ingredients)? Thanks.

I would maybe double the tomato soup and water and add a few more potatoes and carrots.
